Ugo Sissa, mantovano di origine, fu artista, architetto, fotografo, pittore e colto viaggiatore. Dal 1953 al 1958 lavorò a Baghdad come Capo architetto del Governo e in quegli anni costituì una ricca collezione di reperti mesopotamici. La raccolta, tra le pochissime del genere presenti in Italia, è costituita da circa duecentocinquanta pezzi; in un primo tempo concessa in deposito gratuito dagli eredi, è stata di recente acquistata dal Comune di Mantova. Notevole l’estensione cronologica dei reperti databili tra la fine del VI millennio avanti Cristo e la fine del I millennio dopo Cristo. Il percorso espositivo è ordinato secondo una suddivisione tematica dei materiali, sistemati poi per provenienza e cronologia. Le tipologie degli oggetti consentono di conoscere e scoprire alcuni aspetti caratteristici della civiltà mesopotamica quali la vita quotidiana, l’architettura, la scrittura e la religione. Tra i materiali più interessanti vi sono tavolette con iscrizioni cuniformi, un mattone con il suggello di re Nabucodonosor, amuleti e statuette votive.
Mantuan born Ugo Sissa was an artist, architect, photographer and cultured traveller. During his time as Chief Architect to the government in Baghdad, between 1953 and 1958, he set up a fine collection of some 250 pieces of Mesopotamic artefacts. The collection, one of the very few in Italy, has recently been purchased by the Comune di Mantova. Prior to this it had been loaned without charge by his heirs. The pieces cover a broad period ranging from the end of the VI millennium BC to the end of the I millennium AD. The pieces, exhibited by subject matter, origin and date provide an insight into the daily life, architecture, writing and religion of the Mesopotamic civilisation. Some of the most fascinating items include tablets with wedge-shaped characters, a brick with king Nebucanezzor’s seal, amulets and votive statues.
